Use and Care Guide Beeswax Finish

First: If there’s a problem, don’t worry please contact us. We want you to be happy.

This toy has been finished in a traditional manner with a beeswax polish made from beeswax (with a pinch of carnauba) & linseed oil and can be easily reapplied if finish dulls or wears from use. Beeswax finish can sometimes spot onto absorbent material. Please don’t leave on great-grandmother’s lace tablecloth or your original Honus Wagner card.

Dirt and smudges can be cleaned with a damp cloth (wring out water). Don’t use lemon furniture polish, Murphy’s Oil Soap, or similar. The products aren’t necessary and can harm the finish. If smudges don’t clear with a damp cloth, try adding mild dish soap.

This product is best kept at a temperature and humidity comfortable to people. Violent swings in temperature and especially humidity can cause the wood to split or crack – keep away from space heaters, steaming cookware, air conditioning / heating vents, and similar.

Seasonal changes in humidity will cause wood to expand and contract. The wood may change color slightly as it ages; light wood will darken and dark wood will lighten.

This toy is not an aquatic toy. Please leave it out of the bathtub (and chances are if you’re considering this as a bath companion, there are a dozen toys already in the bathtub). If the toy becomes soaked with water, wipe off the excess water and allow to air-dry. Don’t use a hair dryer or similar device as the rapid introduction and removal of water may split the wood.

Use and Care Guide Linseed Oil

When the finish dulls or is worn, the wood can be returned to new with an additional coat or two of oil. It’s not a difficult process and a number of widely available wood finish oils will work (including some sold at the grocery store). Please contact us if you’d like more information.

Use and Care Guide Unfinished Wood

First: If there’s a problem, don’t worry please contact us. We want you to be happy.

Use and Care Guide Hardwood Clocks

First: If there’s a problem, don’t worry please contact us. We want you to be happy.

The clock movement is AA battery operated. Adjust the time with the dial on the back. Turning the clock hands themselves can damage the delicate gears and break the clock.

DO NOT hang the clock using the built in hanger on the clock movement. The clock is too heavy and may damage the movement. Only use the attached metal hangers.

CAUTION This product is finished with Tung Oil, a tree nut based finish. If someone who has a severe nut allergy may come into contact with this please take appropriate action.

This product is best kept at a temperature and humidity comfortable to people. Violent swings in temperature and especially humidity can cause the wood to split or crack ? keep away from space heaters, steaming cookware, air conditioning / heating vents, and similar. The wood may change color slightly as it ages This will vary and depends on environmental factors such as sun exposure.

Seasonal changes in humidity will cause wood to expand and contract. It’s possible that slight gaps might appear between separate pieces of wood during periods of dry air (they will close up when the humidity increases). Likewise, in periods of moist air, moving parts may fit more snugly.

Splits or cracks are unlikely, but possible. Minimize the possibility, if the product becomes soaked with water, wipe off the excess water and allow to air-dry. Don’t use a hair dryer or similar device as the rapid introduction and removal of water may split the wood.

As with all finishes tung oil has its strengths and weaknesses. It is a penetrating finish so most of the oil is below the surface of the wood. This gives a depth and richness to the wood while allowing you to still feel the wood. Surface applied finishes encase the wood and remove the tactile.

Compared to surface finishes, tung oil (and oil finishes in general) is more susceptible to staining and water damage, so don’t use this product on the garage floor, in the bathtub, or the like. The finish should hold up fine to normal use and wear.

When the finish dulls or is worn, the wood can be returned to new with an additional coat or two of oil. It’s not a difficult process and a number of widely available wood finish oils will work. Please call or email and I can walk you through it.

Use and Care Guide Knobs and Pulls

First: If there’s a problem, don’t worry please contact us. We want you to be happy.

Your hardware is finished with semi-gloss lacquer which should need no reapplication. However, if the finish becomes heavily scratched or damaged you can lightly sand the wood with 150 grit sandpaper, remove dust, and apply semi-gloss lacquer to match. This product is best kept at a temperature and humidity comfortable to people.

Dirt and smudges can be cleaned with a damp cloth (wring out water). Lemon furniture polish, Murphy’s Oil Soap, or similar may harm the finish. If smudges don’t clear with a damp cloth, try adding mild dish soap.

Can I use the screws currently on my cabinet? Maybe – your knobs are predrilled for the screws that came with them – if your screws are larger or threaded differently, then they may crack or split the knob. If in doubt – use the screws sent with the knobs.

The knobs typically allow a screw penetration of 1/2″. Any further and the knob could be cracked or broken. Your particular hardware may allow for greater penetration. Confirm this with a copy of your original warranty or measure with homemade measuring stick ( a piece of spaghetti or slim toothpick). Insert measuring stick into predrilled hole and then mark depth with pencil. Remove stick – this is your safe penetration distance. DO NOT USE ELECTRIC DRILL OR SCREWDRIVER TO INSTALL HARDWARE. This may over-tighten and crack hardware. Only use handtools to install.

Before attaching any knobs, place the screw through the door or drawer and place measuring stick (see above paragraph) next to screw. If the screw protrudes beyond the safe zone stop and call me (513-442-6924) – I’ll send smaller screws. Of course call me if the screw doesn’t make it out of the cabinet and I’ll send some bigger screws.
