Pa stands outside the barn eyeing the infant dragon crawling from her egg. Another figure watches the scene from the porch. Pa thought the egg just another hunk of rock and earth. The sinkhole a convenient dump. Now though. Now he doesn't know what to make of it.
This piece started with a geode picked up at a framers market. Next I turned to the shop for those great pieces of wood saved for special projects. The top board is a piece of maple I had been saving for a furniture piece (a table), but I thought it made a great sinkhole. The wood itself has wonderful character. A piece of oak made the perfect subterranean earth.
Everything you see is natural. The geode is from an Indiana creek. The top board is maple with natural knot hole. The lower board is oak. The other woods are a mix of poplar, walnut, hickory, cedar, oak (again), maple (again), walnut, and cherry. The wood has only been finished with linseed oil.
While not built to scale, the buildings are roughly an eighth of an inch to a foot. This fantasy / rural art sculpture is about 32" long, 9" wide, and 5" tall.
This rural / fantasy art sits on table or hangs on wall in horizontal or vertical position (built in hangers on back let piece sit flush on wall or table).
